HFOT honors Vietnam Veterans

Forty-five years ago, on March 29, 1973, the last U.S. troops withdrew from Vietnam, ending America’s longest conflict to date. There were no Welcome Home parades to greet these brave men and women when they arrived back to the United States, nor had there been many warm receptions from their countrymen.

We at Homes For Our Troops realize Vietnam Veterans were not given the appropriate thanks or treatment for their service four decades ago. We also recognize that it is the quiet professionalism these heroes displayed, and their solemn vow to never let this happen again, that have caused America to appropriately welcome home our returning Veterans from our current conflicts.

On National Vietnam War Veterans Day – and every day – we want all Vietnam Veterans to know you are appreciated and honored for your service and sacrifice. Your patriotism and determination are the reasons Veterans today are treated with the respect and admiration they greatly deserve. Thank you for leading the way!

A Fundraising Website That Works

The Fundraising Team is excited to share our redesigned website! It is so important for our current and future supporters to easily access information on how to fundraise for HFOT with just a few clicks or swipes.

The new site features real examples of HFOT fundraisers. Our mindset is to inspire new supporters by making it easy for them to see themselves as an HFOT fundraiser. It doesn’t hurt to give some extra love to our longtime supporters that continually fundraise year after year. With a cleaner look, straightforward navigation, and plenty of visuals, we want to encourage you to host a fundraiser of your own.

If you find yourself talking to friends and family about the important work of Homes For Our Troops, fundraising is a great way to turn your advocacy into action. As your fundraising visions start to develop, we hope our new site will open your eyes to some new possibilities and ideas that have worked well for others.

Homes For Our Troops receives 4-Star Charity rating for seventh year in a row

For the seventh year in a row, Homes For Our Troops has received the highest possible rating of 4 stars from Charity Navigator, America’s largest independent charity evaluator. This places HFOT in the top four percent of charities rated by the organization.

As a valued supporter, you can have trust and confidence that we will be excellent stewards of your money, as nearly 90 cents of every dollar will go directly toward providing post – 9/11 Veterans with the specially adapted custom homes they need.

We recommend you check the charity ratings of any organization you are interested in supporting. By researching beforehand you are making sure your contributions are going directly toward the organization’s mission. In addition to Charity Navigator, CharityWatch, and BBB Wise Giving Alliance are also excellent resources to evaluate charities. All three of these organizations measure nonprofits based on accountability, transparency, donor privacy, and the efficiency of how donations are spent.

Massachusetts Governor honors HFOT for 250th home

Massachusetts Governor Charlie Baker honored Homes For Our Troops for the delivery of its 250th home by awarding the organization with a Proclamation at a ceremony at the State House on Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2018.

More than 100 supporters and donors attended the event, where Gov. Baker and State Representative Shaunna O’Connell gave speeches.

Baker highlighted the significance of organizations like HFOT. “This is a very important organization doing really special work on behalf of some men and women who on behalf of our country have played a terribly difficult hand. We take great pride in the quality and commitment of the many private nonprofit organizations who wake up every day trying to figure out how to make life here in Commonwealth and across the country better for Veterans.”

Dawnalee Downing, wife of HFOT home recipient Michael Downing, closed the event by telling the audience how much the home has changed their lives. The Downings received their home in Middleborough, Mass., in 2010. Their home was the 50th one built by HFOT.

“Michael has so much safety in this home. This house is made for him,” Dawnalee says. “Do we have our same normal since before he got hurt? Absolutely not. But in the last eight years, we have created a new normal and we are excelling at it.”
